Secure social media - Safely setting up social media.

In today's interconnected world, it's crucial to prioritize our online privacy.  One important aspect of this is the need to secure our social media use.

With each passing day, the digital landscape evolves, presenting both opportunities and challenges. In this blog, we will delve into essential tips, techniques, and best practices that can empower you to establish a strong shield of security in the digital realm.

In this blog, we look at five things you should consider when setting up your social media account.

  1. Choosing a Site: The first step to setting up your social media page is choosing the site or sites you want to set your page up on. It’s important to choose a site that has a good reputation and good policies on protecting its user's security and privacy. Look for platforms that have a track record of implementing robust security measures and transparent privacy policies.
  2. Choose the right username: It’s important to remember that when choosing a username, you should avoid using personal information, or anything that can make you easily identifiable, for example, your name, birthdate, etc. Opt for a unique username that doesn't reveal too much about your identity (unless you are trying to promote yourself, for example on LinkedIn).
  3. Create a strong and unique password: During the account creation process, choose a strong and unique password. Include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using common or easily guessable information, such as your name or birthdate; Avoid using the same password across multiple accounts.
  4. Use multi-factor authentication. Most social media providers provide the facility for using an authenticator app, an SMS or even an email as a secondary form of authentication.  What this means is that, even if your password is stolen, people won’t necessarily be able to log in as you.
  5. Customise privacy settings: Take the time to review and adjust the privacy settings of your social media account. Determine who can see your profile, posts, and personal information. Consider limiting access to trusted friends and connections and be cautious about sharing content publicly.

By following these guidelines, you can lay the foundation for a secure and safe social media experience.
